sight seeing

  • Bus Tour
You can choose from two bus tours operators - Sevilla Tour www.citysightseeing-spain.com or Tour por Sevilla. The buses depart from: Paseo de Colon/ Torre del Oro, Plaza de Espana, Isla Magica and Monasterio de la Cartuja usually every 20 minutes. It is a good way to see the city on a very short visit, but if you are staying longer, exploring narrow streets on foot is the best way to see Seville and you can spend the cash elsewhere.
Before buying your ticket for the Bus Tour, check out information about Sevilla Card at www.sevillacard.es as you can get a discount on the bus tours as well as other attractions, museums, restaurants, etc in Seville. The prices start at 22 Euros for one day Sevilla Card.

Construction of the Cathedral (the largest cathedral in the world) started in 1401 on the site of 12th century mosque. It is late gothic style, but it includes Renaissance elements as well. The Cathedral consists of 40 pillars and 44 chapels; it is 126 meters long, 82 meters wide and 30 meters high. The altar piece in the Main Chapel, designed by Pyeter Dancart, is the largest in Christian world. Gold peso coins from Peru and Mexico were used for the gilding. There is a tomb of Christopher Columbus designed in 1898, but there are still disputes between Seville and Santo Domingo, both claiming to have the body of Christopher Columbus.  The body of King Fernando III, who conquered Seville in 1248 lies in a silver casket in the Royal Chapel designed by Herman Ruiz who built the Giralda.
You can get great views of the city if you walk all the way up the Giralda /94 m high/ and listen to the beautiful sounds of 25 bells. The tower, part of the original mosque, was built in 1184-1194 in the final stages of the Muslim presence in the city. The only parts left of the original mosque today are Patio de los Naranjos and its surrounding buildings. The Visigoth fountain in the centre of the patio served for the purposes of ritual ablutions for Muslims. There are two similar minarets built in the same period as the Giralda; one in Marrakech and second in Rabat. In 16th century statue of Giraldillo was put on the top of the tower as a symbol of the triumph of the catholic faith (the statue is 7.5 m high and it is used as a weather vane). • The main shopping area in Seville is around Calle Sierpes, C/ Cuna and C/ Tetuan, which is just 5 minutes walk from the apartment. Most of the shops are closed during siesta (14.00 - 17.00) and on Sundays, but there are few markets you can visit on Sunday mornings.

  • Markets
Charco de la Pava (car park of Expo 1992 on Avenida Carlos III - next to a round building that looks like the "coliseum"). This flea market was moved from Alameda de Hercules. You can buy here lots of bric-a-brac from lamps, books, pictures, furniture to CDs, remote controls and clothes. Sunday mornings.
Plaza de Museo - great setting just in front of the Museo de Bellas Artes, you can buy here paintings, drawings from local artists. Prices are very reasonable. Sunday mornings.
Plaza del Cabildo - if you like collectionables such as postcards, books, coins, tins or magazine, this is great place for you! Sunday mornings.
Calle Feria - is famous for its Thursday morning antiques markets. I would say it is very similar to the one at Charco de la Pava. The only difference are more tourists and higher prices.
Food Markets - Triana (between streets San Jorge and Alfareria)
                          -
    Arenal (Calle Pastor y Landero)
                          - the closest food market to the apartment is Encarnacion (just behind Plaza de la Encarnacion) and another one on Calle Feria.

  • Ceramics - very good place to buy plates, jugs or pots is in Triana at C/ Antillano and C/ Campos.

  • Avenida 5 Cines at Marques de Paradas 15 (tel. 954 293 025) shows some international films in their original versions, mostly in English, French or German. Shows start usually at 17.00, then 21.30 and then at 23.00. Programmes of the films in Avenida 5 Cines and other cinemas in Seville can be found at www.cinentradas.com and time tables at www.abc.es/cines/ .

  • Beaches close to Seville
Costa de la Luz - just about 1 hour drive by car from Seville is the natural  sandy beach of Mazagon set against the cliffs  (the beach is 3km from Mazagon town beside the Parador de Mazagon (hotel)). Before you enter the parking area there is a vast barbeque area under the trees with tables and seats. The beach has one restaurant which operates just during summer months with great sea food. There are showers and toilets as well. The beach is not crowded and has very relaxed atmosphere.

    Punta Umbria
is another beach as well one hour from Seville. It is much bigger than Mazagon and gets very crowded during July and August, but it does just fine for a short visit. There is as well a restaurant on the beach.

A 94 km drive from Seville is Matalascanas, which is a fairly modern resort, but still very pleasant and has a long clean sandy beach with restaurants.
Also, there is an 18 hole golf course at Matalascanas. More info at www.golfdunasdedonana.com.

    Bolonia beach
is a bit further out of Seville, but this 2 hour drive is well worth the effort (it is situated 10 km down the coast from Zahara de los Atunes). It has a long sandy beach with restaurants and there are the Roman ruins of the former town of Baleo Claudia which you can visit for free if you are an EU citizen. Avoid the bank holiday weekend in May as the traffic could extend your journey to 3 hours.

Isla Cristina is an hour and half drive from Seville. The more busy beaches are close to the towns Isla Cristina and La Antilla. There are couple of more peaceful ones in between: Playa de la Casita Azul, Playa Icona-Pesmar, El Hoyo and Playa Redondela. Most of them have toilets, showers and restaurant. There are as well 2 camp sites (www.campinggiralda.com). The picture is from Playa Icona - Pesmar which is popular with kite surfers.

  • Walking in Parque Natural Sierra Norte
We recommend walking around Cazalla de la Sierra, San Nicolas del Puerto, Constantina, Cierro del Hierro and El Pedroso. A 3 hours walk called Las Laderas starts in Cazalla. It is very peaceful walking through these hills full of cork trees and dotted with little farms where you often see andalucian black pigs just lying by the streams. You can find more about these walks at www.andalucia.org, click on Tourist Atlas on the left side, then click on province Sevilla and then on Natural Spaces at the top of the page. Click on Sierra Norte and you can choose from trekking, rural or biking routes. More photos.

  • Another walk in Sierra Norte called Arroyo de las Cañas (3 hours) starts from El Pedroso (60 km from Seville). We do recommend this walk in mid April when you can admire the meadows full of wild flowers (the smell is amazing). This walk is very tranquil, you hardly meet anybody, taking you down dusty paths, through glades of cork trees, crossing some fords across the arroyo (stream) where pigs wallow.
    Take a picnic with you.

  • Skiing in Sierra Nevada
If you stay longer in Seville during the Winter, and if you like skiing, Sierra Nevada is just 3 hours away. Pradollano skiing village is situated at 2100 meters and the ski lifts take you to about 3000 meters above the sea level where you can enjoy views of the Mediterranean. Most of the runs are red and blue and ski lifts are fast and modern. Weekends can be very crowded, but if you ski on the red runs, you can really enjoy yourself. Weather is most of the time very sunny and temperatures are very comfortable as well. You can get more information as well as book your accommodation at www.sierranevadaski.com. The ski pass costs 32 Euros the rental of skis and poles is about 15 Euros per day. If you are not really into skiing, you can try tobogganing, dog sledging or skidoos. If you cannot find an accommodation in Pradollano, you can always stay in Granada, 30 minutes from the village.

  • Ronda
Ronda is about 2 hours drive from Seville. It has a spectacular cliff-top setting with 100 meters deep El Tajo gorge and beautiful hills around it. Although, it is a bit touristy, it still retains its tranquillity and peacefulness in the old town and you really get a great mountain like feel. If you want to treat yourself, we recommend Restaurante Albacara in Hotel Montelirio at Tenorio 8, tel. 952873855. www.hotelmontelirio.com. It has great views over the gorge, friendly staff and food is absolutely fabulous. They offer fresh fish and all dishes have modern twist to the Spanish cuisine. Extensive wine list and best of all try banana and passion fruit dessert (3 course lunch + drinks: 80 Euros for 2 people, 1 night at the hotel 100 Euros).

  • El Rocio and National Park Donana
A 78 km drive from Seville lies the village of El Rocio. For me, this is the quintessential Spanish village - with a beautiful church standing in the foreground as you approach, grazing horses to the side, little white houses with colourful shutters and gates,  all standing in contrast with some derelict buildings. In many respects, this village has a Mexican feel with its dusty sandy streets, people riding horses and boys showing off on their loud motorbikes.
Legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared in El Rocio in the 13th Century, and more recently on 2 occasions in the last 20 years. As a result Romeria del Rocio (Pilgrimage) is held every year in the 7th weekend after Easter. More than 90 brotherhoods and other believers travel on horse or foot to the village of El Rocio, where celebrations last until Monday morning.

Church of Nuestra Senora del Rocio

The national park  covers  about 507 sq km and is world renowned for its wetlands and bird watching. Access to the national park is limited. You will need to call and book a paid guided tour. For more information, please see http://parquenacionaldonana.com (contact Centro de Visitantes el Acebuche, which is about 12 km south from El Rocio, Centro de Visitantes Jose Antonio Varverde - 60 km from El Rocio or tour operators organizing trips to Donana National Park at Sanlucar de Barrameda). The tours last for 4 hours and people are transported in terrain vehicles (they offer walking tours, horse riding, boat trips or bird watching tours. Prices are from 9 to 90 Euros and the number of people in the groups range from 8 o 50. More info about active holidays see www.donana.es ). But you can still wander by yourself  in the woodlands of Coto del Rey starting at the  north-eastern edge of the village.

  • Arab Baths
c/ Aire 15, tel. 955 010 025/26, www.airedesevilla.com, open from 10.00am - 2.00am. You can treat yourself to a thermal bath and aromatherapy for 18 Euros (90 minutes). If you add a 15 minutes massage it will cost you all together 24 Euros. You should start with a warm bath, then use the cold pool, followed by hot bath, then jacuzzi, salt bath and aromatherapy shower. In between you can relax in the rest room, drinking cold mint tea. If you booked a massage, you get a wrist band, so assistants can find you during your 2 hour session. They provide towels, slippers and dressing gowns. Soap is available in the showers, but I would recommend bringing all other toiletries with you as well as hairdryer. On your way out you can stop at the tea shop, and have a cake or an alcoholic drink. You can book as well for different types of massage, exfoliation, etc. Booking recommended. More photos.
